Yesterday was the first night of the Republican National Convention, and if you didn’t watch it, I don’t blame you.
The event was a stark contrast to the light, hope, and unity we heard during the Democratic Convention. As to be expected from the party of Trump, this convention was filled with hate, fear, and division from start to finish.
Some of Trump’s biggest fans, and closest family members, spoke of a dystopian future in which Democrats have taken away every last one of our freedoms. They are, of course, talking about our efforts to stem the tide of COVID-19 by wearing masks, pass commonsense gun reform to stop the epidemic of gun violence, and stop the systemic racism within our criminal justice institutions that is disproportionately killing Black Americans.
And naturally, President Trump himself made multiple appearances to boost his ego. Last night, he and Republicans had the audacity to pat themselves on the back for their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while more than 175,000 Americans are dead and almost 6 million have been infected. It’s absolutely shameful.
These are the people trying to take back the House, hold onto control of the Senate, and keep Trump in the White House for another four catastrophic years. For all that we value and cherish, we cannot let them succeed.
