In March, Congress saved the country from complete economic collapse by passing the CARES Act, a comprehensive package that provided Americans with benefits to withstand the economic fallout of the COVID-19 crisis, including an $600 a week payment for unemployed Americans.
The unemployment insurance was a lifeline for millions of Americans struggling with job loss during the pandemic -- allowing them to buy food, pay rent, and afford critical medication.
But that unemployment insurance expired at the end of July, and Senate Republicans have blocked another comprehensive benefits package. Donald Trump signed an executive order giving the unemployed $300 dollars a week -- but those payments will not cover all unemployed workers. Worse, economists note cuts to unemployment payments will lead to 3.4 million fewer jobs created over the next year.
It’s clear everyday Americans are not a priority for the GOP or Donald Trump. Major corporations and Trump’s cronies have prospered during this crisis while poor and middle-class Americans slide closer to economic devastation.
For the American economy to recover from this crisis, we need another economic stimulus package for poor and middle-class Americans NOW.
We need you to demand Congress help average Americans through these difficult times.
