We need to fight back against the GOP’s concerted efforts to suppress our votes and steal this election.
That means we need to push back against Republican attacks on USPS and ensure that the vital government agency is funded and all of our mail-in ballots will be delivered and received in time to be counted.
But there’s another piece of the puzzle: we need to codify a protection of Americans’ voting rights into LAW.
There used to be legislation that guarded the right to vote. It was called the Voting Rights Act -- and for nearly 50 years, it gave the federal government the power to step in and stop states from enacting suppressive and discriminatory practices like we’ve seen crop up around the country.
The Voting Rights Act is technically still on the books -- but in 2013, the Supreme Court took away the federal government’s ability to enforce one of the most crucial provisions of the law. Since that time, states with a history of voter suppression have re-engaged in the kind of racist voter ID laws, voter roll purges, and voting rights restrictions that led to the law’s passage in the first place.
We need to restore the Voting Rights Act if we want to restore fairness to the ballot box and make sure we won’t be cheated out of this election.
