Dear John,
In its sixth year of war, Yemen is facing bombs, a blockade, flooding, cholera, famine and COVID-19. During the recent flooding in Yemen, buildings in the old city of Sana’a that have stood for over one thousand years were severely damaged. Yemen has experienced flooding before, but the constant military air raids in the capital city exacerbated the damage caused by these floods. To pour salt into an already gaping wound, in the midst of all this suffering, USAID halted aid to 80% of Yemen early on in the COVID-19 pandemic. This aid still hasn’t been restored.
By arming and providing logistical and other support to Saudia Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the United States is playing a critical role in the war in Yemen, when we should be playing a critical role in ending it. While anti-war champions in Congress continue to work on that, right now the most immediate thing we can demand is that the U.S. restore and expand aid to all areas of Yemen to alleviate suffering. Can you send a message now to your representatives to demand that USAID give the Yemeni people the aid they were promised? <[link removed]>
Not only is the United States helping the Saudis and the UAE wage this war, it is now also rescinding life-saving humanitarian aid. The situation on the ground has gotten even worse since the suspension first went into effect. Yemen is experiencing severe fuel shortages that are affecting every aspect of life. How are hospitals without power going to treat COVID-19 patients in Yemen? The recent flooding also compounded other issues on the ground. USAID has an obligation to give Yemen the aid it was promised and then some.
Help the Yemeni people by reaching out to your representatives in Congress about restoring and expanding aid to Yemen. <[link removed]>It only takes a few minutes! You can do it during a commercial break while watching the news or even after you’ve scrolled through your entire Twitter feed and need something else to do. Change can be made in your in-between moments!
Thank you for reading my first official email as a new member of the CODEPINK team! My name is Danaka and I am super excited to be engaged with the work CODEPINK is doing. I was on the organizing team for the National Day of Action for Yemen that CODEPINK co-sponsored a few weeks ago. Being able to continue working with all the incredible people who are taking action for Yemen is an honor. On Thursday at 5PM EST I’ll be doing a webinar with Dr. Shireen Al-Adeimi and Dr. Aisha Jumaan <[link removed]>, two women who are doing incredible work surrounding Yemen. Join us! <[link removed]>
CODEPINK has been advocating for an end to U.S. involvement in the Yemen war for a long time now. We know it can seem repetitive or hopeless, but the war machine thrives when we feel hopeless. Let’s keep advocating for Yemen together. Thank you for your support.
Towards peace,
Danaka, Ariel, Ann, Angela, Carley, Caty, Cody, Eli, Emily, Izzy, Jodie, Kelsey, Leila, Leonardo, Maxine, Mary, Medea, Michelle, Nancy, Paki, Teri, and Yousef
