To say that 2020 has been "unpredictable" is to say the least about this year.

The persistence of COVID-19 as it exacerbates racial and economic inequities. A long-overdue reckoning with the violent, systemic oppression against our Black communities. Federal agents' unlawful attacks on press and protesters alike. November's critical election still to come.

As every unforeseeable event unfolds around us, we at the ACLU know one certainty that has enabled us to respond quickly and decisively no matter what: The reliable support of our monthly donors – our Guardians of Liberty. • Press for a bold reimagining of the role of law enforcement in America, including efforts to cut police department budgets and dismantle the Department of Homeland Security – while pushing to reinvest in services that help rather than harm communities of color.
• Defend free speech by educating protesters about their rights, deploying legal observers, and going to court to protect the rights of protesters and journalists whenever they are violated – whether by local police, federal authorities, or our president.
• Challenge voter suppression aimed at people of color, poor people, young adults, and the elderly while also pressing for access to voting by mail and expanded early voting in the pandemic – so come this November, everyone can vote like our rights depend on it.
