Intellectual Takeout is proud to announce Backchannel: a continuing opportunity for you to hear from some of our country’s brightest minds, ask questions, and gain their behind-the-scenes insights and wisdom.

Backchannel is a free, live videocast presentation and discussion that will be taking place each week. Our readers and supporters will easily be able to watch this presentation from one of our thinkers on a designated topic, and submit their questions for the subsequent Q&A session. It’s a great opportunity to join an interactive forum with people of like minds having an inspiring discussion!

Dr. Mark Brennan

This week's episode:
What It’s Like To Be A Professor

with Mark Brennan,
Chronicles Books Editor

Our first Backchannel event with Dr. Paul Gottfried was a tremendous success with hundreds of viewers taking part in the discussion about the current gender madness seeping into all aspects of our lives. The recording will be available soon.

This week’s Backchannel videocast will feature Mark Brennan, PhD.: The Ivory Tower Iconoclast and books editor of Chronicles magazine. As a professor at New York University (NYU), Mark will be discussing What It’s Like To Be A Professor in an age of social and intellectual chaos. The event will take place on Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. CDT. We invite the audience to ask questions via comments, and Dr. Brennan will answer selected questions live during the broadcast.

You will not want to miss this one!

Dr. Brennan is truly an iconoclast. After 20 years working on Wall St., he went back to school and earned his PhD in history from the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, he has taught at Syracuse, Cornell, UPenn, NYU, and even the University of Havana. Traditionally, the subjects he has taught include ethics and moral philosophy, foreign policy, economic history, writing, and Cuban history. He speaks five languages, played Division I football, and is learning Latin during the pandemic.

His discussion What It’s Like To Be A Professor will be of interest to Americans of all ages. For those who have long since departed college or never attended, he will provide you a unique perspective on campus culture and administration as well as keen insights on the younger generations. If you’re still in college or recently departed, Dr. Brennan will provide you with observations about your generation, the changes he’s seen since 2011, your prospects in life, and the growing divide between “those who shower before work and those who shower after work”.

If you want to take a really deep dive into contemporary America and its college culture, he recommends the following three books:
▪ Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
▪ Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life by William Deresiewicz
▪ The Coddling of the American Mind by Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt

Join us tomorrow, Wednesday, August 26, at 12 p.m. CDT. The event will be simulcast live in two places: at our Intellectual Takeout Facebook page, and also at our Charlemagne Institute YouTube channel (click on "Videos").
