We’re all familiar with children who have trouble managing difficult emotions — they throw tantrums, lash out or do self-destructive things. There are effective therapies for helping both young kids and teenagers learn to rein in their emotions. But there are also children at the other extreme who suppress their feelings too much. They need help learning to become flexible and open to emotion.

This week on childmind.org we round up help for both under-controlled and over-controlled kids. For those who are overwhelmed by their emotions, it’s called DBT ([link removed]). And for kids who are too rigid and closed to new experiences, it’s called RO DBT ([link removed]). RO DBT is a relatively new treatment, and it's been shown to help people with a variety of diagnoses — including autism, anorexia, anxiety and depression.
