John,
This morning, my sweet little Daniel should have been at freshman orientation with his classmates. He should be getting ready to start his first year of high school. But he never will, because he was murdered in his first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary when he was just 7 years old.
Every minute of every day since then, I've felt constant heartache. But there are certain milestones, like today, that leave me breathless.
I miss him to my core. I miss his face, his voice, his warm hugs. I miss how he would excitedly describe every detail of his first day of school. What would he have thought about high school? Or about how different this school year will look with everything going on in the world right now?
I'll never know. All I can do is spend today and every day making good on the promise I made when Daniel was murdered: to do whatever it takes to make sure no other parent suffers through this never-ending agony.
Right now, that means reaching our goal of raising $350,000 to sustain and expand our lifesaving programs – but we're still short. With many students heading back to school in person, we must work as fast as we can to protect them from gun violence. So please, will you donate as much as you can right now, by our Friday deadline, to help us prevent the next tragedy before it happens?
Please rush $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now. Your gift is critical to helping us prevent school shootings and protect more children from gun violence this school year.

If we don't work fast enough, more children's lives will be put at risk – especially considering the surge in reports of children in imminent danger during this pandemic. But we can't expand our work to prevent future tragedies without your help, and that means giving whatever you can right now to help us reach our goal.
I'll never stop missing Daniel – whether it's the first day of school, a summer afternoon in the backyard or a winter morning enjoying twinkling Christmas lights at sunrise. The only way I can get through this pain is by continuing to work every day to save other families from going through it. That's what keeps me going.
Thank you for supporting this vital work, especially on days like today.
Mark Barden (Daniel's father)
