Let me tell you something most consultants would never let a candidate say out loud: Washington didn't pick me.

It’s true. The establishment has its candidate in this race, and it isn't me. I don't have the big-money network or the DC PACs lining up at the door to aid my campaign. I've made my peace with that because I chose to refuse corporate PAC dollars, and I would rather owe this seat to the people of this district than to the people who fund the problem.

I spent twenty-one years in uniform, flying F/A-18s off a carrier deck. I spent time at the Pentagon, at NATO, and working with the House Armed Services Committee, where I learned how this government actually works — and how it too often fails the people it's supposed to serve.

Rob Wittman is vulnerable, but flipping it takes a Democrat who can look a skeptical voter in the eye — a veteran, a business owner, a guy raised on food stamps — and earn a vote that was never guaranteed. I've done that my entire life.

I don’t believe a nominee handpicked and bankrolled by Washington can do that, and we can't afford to find that out in November.
