Warren Petersen, the Republican candidate for Arizona Attorney General, just told more than 18,000 Arizona Dreamers — people who grew up here, went to school here, work here as nurses, firefighters, and small business owners — to "be ready to be deported or prosecuted."

Not criminals. Not strangers. Our neighbors.

Petersen didn't stop there. He's now earned the endorsement of Joe Arpaio — the former sheriff held in criminal contempt of court for racially motivated policing. Together, they're promising to bring back the politics of fear that once made Arizona a national symbol of anti-immigrant extremism.

Arizona voters lived through SB1070. We remember what happened when politicians used government power to terrorize immigrant families. Communities were torn apart. Families lived in fear. And Arizona became a cautionary tale for the rest of the country.

Petersen wants to take us back there — and further.

Early voting starts this Wednesday, June 24. That means the clock is running on one of the most important elections in Arizona's recent history. Attorney General Kris Mayes has stood up for Dreamers in court, fought the cartels, and helped take more than 27 million fentanyl pills off Arizona streets. She is exactly the kind of Attorney General Arizona needs — and Petersen is exactly the kind of opponent who will be well-funded and well-organized.
