Since 2022, gun homicides have declined by 46.5% statewide. This is a historic drop that has made many communities safer than they’ve been in decades , and it didn’t happen by chance.
It happened because Pennsylvania invested in the Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) programs. VIP puts trained, trusted community members on the ground through street outreach, hospital-based programs, and law enforcement partnerships to de-escalate conflict, prevent shootings, and help communities thrive.
Making a Change Group (MACG) in Delaware County is one of the street outreach groups that receives VIP funding. When MACG received information that individuals from rival neighborhoods were planning to “shoot up” a popular Chester City pizzeria during a baby shower, MACG responded. They quickly deployed community leaders and credible messengers to meet with the individuals planning the attack. Drawing on their experience, mediation skills, and reputations, the team was able to avert a horrific mass shooting .
Because of VIP, stories like this happen all across the Commonwealth. It works, and we need to double down.
The return on investment is real: research shows that every $1 spent on these violence-prevention initiatives saves Pennsylvanians at least $5 in healthcare, criminal justice, and other violence-related expenses, and adds economic value to Pennsylvania communities.
We've already shown up at the Capitol with gun violence survivors, faith leaders, and doctors. We've made the calls, sent the letters, and met with lawmakers in their districts. This is the final push, and your message matters.
