The pandemic has shown us how much we all need green spaces

Dear John

Our country is in the grip of an ecological emergency.

A quarter of native mammals are at imminent risk of extinction [1]. We have less woodland cover than just about anywhere in Europe.

And now the government’s plans for drastic deregulation – from ditching environmental protections in the pursuit of a trade deal with Trump, to the watering down of environmental regulations in our planning system – means the risks could soon dramatically rise.

With your support we want to:
* Save and strengthen environmental protections – not sacrifice them in a bid to woo Donald Trump.
* Prevent the planning system from becoming a tool for big developers to rush through their projects at the expense of nature and communities.

But we’re going to need your support to do it. So please make a donation today to help us fight the ecological emergency.

Just last week the head of the Environment Agency backed a proposal to weaken the pollution laws for rivers, lakes and coastlines [2].

It’s another worrying example of the direction that the UK seems to be heading.

But together, Friends of the Earth and its supporters have an incredible record of protecting nature and empowering communities.

The last time the government tried to rip up planning regulations – to help the fracking industry start drilling for gas all over the country – we fought alongside community groups and won.

When scientists discovered that bees were being harmed by the widespread use of 3 neonicotinoid pesticides, we worked tirelessly to get the chemicals banned.

But the threats to nature haven’t gone away. They’re growing.

The government’s radical planning reforms could see us lose even more of the precious pockets of thriving nature that remain.

And despite its promises of gold-standard environmental protections after Brexit, it’s looking increasingly likely that the government’s willing to sign away the ones we currently have. Just look at the way it’s quietly watered down the law on farm antibiotics [3].

So please consider making a donation today, to help our expert lawyers, planners and campaigners stand up to the government’s deregulation plans – and stop the ecological emergency.

The future of our planet shouldn't be decided behind closed doors. Thank you for helping us hold those in power to account.

Best wishes,
