Turning struggle into strength: A father’s role in prevention

As a father, Jason Brown knows that some of the most important conversations happen in everyday moments.
Jason's own substance use started with marijuana in eighth grade, escalated throughout high school, and deepened after the loss of his grandmother. Through recovery, he gained not only a new path forward, but also a deeper understanding of the importance of connection, support, and resilience.
Today, as the father of a high school-aged son, Jason is committed to creating the kind of relationship where honest communication comes first.
“My son will face challenges of his own,” Jason says. “My goal is for him to know he never has to face them alone.”
For Jason, prevention isn't a single conversation — it's an ongoing commitment to being present. It's spending time together cooking in the kitchen, listening without judgment, sharing life lessons, and building trust one day at a time. Through these moments, he hopes his son feels seen, heard, and supported, no matter what he's facing.
“I want [my son] to understand that people make mistakes,” Jason shares. “What matters is learning from them, growing through adversity, and building the resilience to keep moving forward.”
Now a professional chef, Jason's cooking has become a meaningful way to connect with his son and strengthen their bond. Whether preparing a meal together or talking through life's challenges, these shared experiences create opportunities for guidance, understanding, and support.
