LA voters are being asked to approve the authority first — and learn the details later
Supporters insist the measure is modest and procedural.
Critics see something very different.
At issue is a proposed charter amendment that would give future Los Angeles politicians broad authority to determine who can participate in city elections.
What makes the proposal unusual is not only what it says.
It is what it does not say.
The language leaves major questions unanswered, including who could eventually become eligible to vote, how such a system would be administered, and what limits — if any — would ultimately be imposed.
In my full California Post column, I examine the measure itself, the political forces behind it, the organizations advocating for it, and why some councilmembers raised concerns before casting their votes.
The larger issue extends beyond Los Angeles.
It raises a fundamental question about citizenship, voting rights, and whether voters should approve broad governmental authority before being told exactly how that authority will be used.
