This month marks two pivotal moments in Canada’s legal history that helped shape the rights many 2SLGBTQI people experience today.

In 1969, the passage of Bill C-150 partially decriminalized homosexuality in Canadaby removing criminal penalties for private, consensual sexual acts between adults over the age of 21. It was the first step in removing the criminalization of 2SLGBTQI lives, and ashift that made future progress possible.

Nearly 3 decades later, in 1996, Bill C-33 added sexual orientation to the Canadian Human Rights Act, categorizing at the federal level a prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

These moments were driven by decades of advocacy, legal challenges, and community resistance, and Egale is proud to be a part of that fight.

This is what progress looks like, and we need to defend it.

Today, we are facing a renewed wave of backlash and rising anti-2SLGBTQI hate. The rights that were fought for still require protection. That’s why Pride is not only about looking back and celebrating, but showing up now for 2SLGBTQI people who need it most.
