For 21 years in the Navy, I answered to exactly two things: the mission and the people flying it with me.

Not corporate donors. Not a party committee. Not whoever wrote the biggest check. When you're on a carrier deck loading live ordnance, none of that exists. There's the job, the people counting on you, and whether you get it right.

I'm running for Congress the same way.

In six weeks, Democrats across Virginia's First District will choose our nominee. And there's a real choice in this primary, underneath the names on the page.

Some of the candidates are counting on big-money donors and the Washington establishment's PACs to carry them across the line. That money always comes from somewhere, and it always wants something in return.

That’s how D.C. has worked for a long time, and it's exactly why so little ever changes.

So I made an early decision not to take a dime of corporate PAC money. I believe this is critically important because you can't be owned by people you never let in the door.

I've spent my life accountable to people whose lives were on the line, not to a donor list. I'm not about to start answering to one now.
