John,

I'm thinking about my dad today. I lost him to lung cancer in 2015, just a few weeks before I got married.

His name was Ted. He was a proud Navy veteran. He loved this country, and he believed in the American Dream. He was an entrepreneur, and he never stopped believing in what other people said couldn't be done.

He had a favorite poem. We shared it. I still think of it, and of him, every day:

Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
-Edgar A. Guest

That lesson has always stayed with me. I learned that, when something looks too hard, you “buckle in with a grin,” and you go to it.

That's what he taught me. It's why I serve.

So this Father's Day, I'm holding him close. And I'm thinking of all the dads, and all the people who stood in for them, who taught us to keep going.

Happy Father's Day.

Maggie
