I’m so honored today to have been re-elected as the President of IDCCA. I thought I could take some time this afternoon to talk to you about my experience in local politics, and why I’m so invested in IDCCA’s mission.

I started my career as a union organizer with Painters District Council 30, and assisting with labor organizing with the Illinois AFL-CIO. These were roles I proudly held, because I believe that working people are a critical base of the Democratic Party – and unions and labor are some of the levers of power that working people have to force change in our country.

I also wanted to get involved locally. That’s why I ran for Precinct Committeeperson and Village Trustee in my community. I believe that all politics is local and there is where I know I can make the most positive impact.

Here’s the truth, folks: County Chair is one of the hardest and most thankless jobs in the Democratic Party. My fellow Chairs and I aren’t doing it for power or glory. We do it because we believe in the power of our values, the impact that local organizing can have, and the good that the Democratic Party can do for our country.

In 2002 I made the decision to run for County Chair of the Kane County Democratic Party. When I started, Kane County wasn’t as blue as it is today. I had a vision of getting back to the basics of talking to voters and listening to their concerns. That is the vision that I shared with my fellow County Chairs and where I believe the IDCCA should focus our attention.

I’ve stayed involved with IDCCA for so long because I also believe that we can’t take our voters for granted, nor can we take our previous success for granted. We win, and continue to win, because we continue to put in the work to earn those victories.

IDCCA does the work to build our bench and build our Democratic infrastructure all across our state. Democrats win because of the work that we do down the ballot.

And with as important an election year as 2026 will be, we know that we can’t stop that work anytime soon. That’s why I care, and that’s why I keep up this work.
