Hi John,
While the president held a briefing after signing executive orders to provide COVID relief, he made several false statements.
Here are some fact checks on his claims:
- Donald Trump is not responsible for passing the Veterans' Choice Act. President Barack Obama signed this bipartisan bill into law in 2014, the culmination of an effort led by Sen. Bernie Sanders and late Sen. John McCain.
- Democrats are not trying to "steal an election" because our May relief bill passed in the House contained provisions to support mail-in voting. Democrats included funding for states to ensure no eligible voter sits out this election in an effort to protect their health.
- The president said Democrats "don't want to do anything having to do with protecting people from eviction." But the truth is, Mary Gay and her colleagues in the House proposed $100 billion in a rental assistance program and supported the extension of the eviction moratorium.
Not to mention all the times the president claimed that the novel coronavirus would just "go away."
In the House, Mary Gay picked up where the president has failed to meet the needs of the American people and helped to lead the House’s COVID-19 response. Donald Trump, instead, kicked responsibility to the states and once again failed to ensure states had the resources they needed to slow the spread.
Mary Gay has spent the past five months fighting for resources to support families and small businesses, state and local governments, our schools, testing, tracing, and health care.
She's focused on doing her job without tiring to fight for our families -- and she will continue working to keep us safe each day.
