PM in the news
We've had another busy month in terms of media activity following Prince
Harry's comments about family size last month (see 'A limit on royal
babies?' below). This interesting and provocative BBC article on
anti-natalism (not PM's position) featuring our Director, Robin, was
replicated in multiple languages by media outlets across the world and
caused a welcome spike in our website traffic. (You can see links to recent

UK Population bigger and greyer
The latest release by the UK's Office for National Statistics confirms what
we've known for a long time: the country's population is getting bigger,
and older. PM Director Robin points out why "alarmism about a tidal wave of
unproductive pensioners" to justify continuous population growth is a
flawed approach.

A limit on royal babies?
In case you missed it: Prince Harry’s recent comments on choosing a small
family for the sake of the planet caused a tidal wave of media stories on
population issues and enquiries for Population Matters. According to a
YouGov survey, the majority of Brits agree with the Duke of Sussex that it
is necessary to limit one’s family size for the environment, while newly
released data on UK births confirms an ongoing trend towards smaller
families.

US loses 'football field' worth of nature every 30 seconds
A new report from the Center for American Progress reveals that more than
24 million acres of nature have been lost from the contiguous United States
between 2001 and 2017 due to human development; the equivalent of one
football field every 30 seconds.

The fires ravaging the Amazon rainforest are being attributed to slash and
burn agriculture largely driven by our population's booming hunger for
beef. Curbing global meat demand is key to saving the Amazon and fighting
climate change.

Falling birth rates a sign of empowerment
Glamour UK published an excellent article on how declining birth rates
should be embraced as a welcome sign that women have more freedom of choice
than ever before.

The crisis in Venezuela has made it even harder for vulnerable women and
girls to access contraception and reproductive health services, causing a
surge in teenage pregnancies despite the government's promises to advance
family planning.
