Today is Juneteenth.

Today we mark the day the last enslaved Americans learned they were free. Today we celebrate 161 years of Black resilience, Black power, and Black progress.

Freedom is not free. It never has been.

This year, the Supreme Court struck down the protections that made Black political power possible. Within weeks, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Alabama redrew their maps—cracking Black communities apart, breaking up Black-majority districts, stripping us of our voice in Congress.

Our colleague Cleo Fields returned to Congress after 30 years, only to have his district wiped out again. Louisiana goes from two Black-majority districts to one, in a state where one in three residents is Black.

Jim Clyburn said it plainly: “This Supreme Court is resegregating this country.”

The blood spilled on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the courage of every marcher who made the Voting Rights Act possible—we cannot let it be undone quietly, without a fight.
