1. Expert Take: Why Kratom Deserves Attention

This week, in Health Affairs Forefront, our experts Robyn Oster and Linda Richter, Ph.D., joined Leah Kaufman of Shatterproof to raise concerns about the growing use of kratom and why it reminds us of past public health problems.

Kratom is easy to buy at gas stations and convenience stores. It is often sold next to drinks and snacks, with very little regulation. In the first half of 2025, more than one-third of reported poison control cases involving 7-OH, a strong substance related to kratom, led to serious health problems such as seizures and passing out.

We have seen what can happen when addictive products become popular before there are enough rules, education, or treatment options. The opioid crisis caused devastating harm. Hemp-derived THC products also spread quickly, and many warnings were ignored until young people began experiencing serious health effects.

The warning signs for kratom are already here. We still have an opportunity to take action before more people are harmed.
