Today we celebrate Juneteenth by honoring the resilience of Black Americans and reflecting on the ongoing work of building a more just and equitable country and state.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19th, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom for enslaved people, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
This year’s national theme, “Juneteenth Brings Balance to America’s Celebration of Freedom,” reminds us that our history is incomplete without recognizing both the painful legacy of slavery and the generations of Black Americans who fought for freedom and justice.
As the 2024 Juneteenth Grand Marshal of Fairfield County, Inc, I remain deeply grateful for the decades of tireless advocacy led by Opal Lee, affectionately known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth.” Her unwavering commitment to justice and recognition helped lead to President Joe Biden officially signing Juneteenth into law as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Her work is a powerful reminder that change is possible when we continue to push forward with courage, unity, and purpose.
Here in Connecticut, that work continues in our communities and our Party as we fight for a democracy that lives up to its ideals for everyone.
