Homeless Youth and Education in the Time of COVID-19

Before the COVID-19 pandemic threw schools into the chaos of virtual schooling and plans for reopening, children experiencing homelessness already faced numerous barriers to education. The McKinney-Vento Act's section on education ensures that children experiencing homelessness have barriers to education removed and have the right to full participation in school and school activities.

With the pandemic, the largely unplanned shift to virtual classrooms, and the potential of various reopening strategies, these children are facing new barriers, and schools are facing new challenges in makings sure these children receive the education and services they are entitled to.

Join us Wednesday, August, 26, 2020 at 2pm EDT, to discuss some of the barriers children experiencing homelessness have always faced and to dive into new challenges and strategies for facing them--including equity in reopening, specific challenges facing unaccompanied youth, and strategies for lawyers and advocates representing clients and advocating for policy changes in the upcoming school year.

This webinar will feature:
Paige Joki (she/her), Staff Attorney at the Education Law Center Alyssa Phillips (she/her), Education Staff Attorney Law Project at the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless Patricia Julianelle (she/her), Senior Strategist for Program Advancement and Legal Affairs at Schoolhouse Connection Brandy Ryan (she/her), Staff Attorney at the National Homelessness Law Center
