Nuclear disarmament on the global agenda

Dear Friend,

Last week, ICAN launched our latest report: Premeditated: Nuclear Weapons Spending 2025, exposing the shocking fact that the 9 nuclear states spent $119 billion on nuclear weapons last year.

The coverage was massive.

In just a few days, the report generated more than 900 news articles worldwide – and we’re still counting. Reuters, AFP, EFE, Forbes, Stern, Al Jazeera and many others covered the findings, helping carry our message across continents, languages and audiences – reaching millions of people.

Al Jazeera devoted a whole edition of their programme Inside Story to the report featuring ICAN’s Susi Snyder to discuss it

That matters.

Because every headline, every interview and every article helps expose the horrifying truth about nuclear weapons: While governments claim they are protecting people, they are spending billions on weapons of mass destruction that put all of us at risk.

This week has exposed the strategic uselessness of nuclear weapons. In February two nuclear-armed states, the US and Israel, went to war against a non-nuclear-weapon state, Iran. But it’s the nuclear-armed side that now has been brought to the negotiating table and deterred from continued military operations. It only shows that nuclear weapons are expensive, dangerous, and increasingly beside the point.

This is how ICAN helps shape the agenda.

We produce the research. We reveal the numbers. We give journalists, campaigners and decision-makers the evidence they need. And step by step, we move the conversation where it urgently  needs to go: toward nuclear disarmament.

But we need to take bigger steps and move faster.

The attention around Premeditated: Nuclear Weapons Spending 2025 shows what is possible when ICAN has the tools, insights, and resources to break through. Now we want to do more – more research, more media work, more campaigning, and put more pressure on governments to choose people over nuclear weapons.
