PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

We have lots of ways to connect this week through our pillars of Support, Education, and Advocacy; check them out below!

Watch

Support

Relax and enjoy a totally PFLAG movie!

Sometimes self-care means taking a break and watching a movie...and we've got just the movie for PFLAGers!

When conservative Texas church-choir director Maybelline (Jacki Weaver) inherits her son's drag club, she surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy.

This feel-good film--with great performances by Weaver, PFLAG National friend Adrian Grenier, Lucy Liu, Jackie Beat, and more--will have you and your family laughing, crying, and dancing in your seats. Rent or buy today!

Education

Three steps to being a better advocate for voter mobilization

Just because you’re staying in, and times are tough doesn’t mean your GOTV efforts should stop! So, stay safe and take these steps to engage:

  1.  Learn: Check out voter mobilization efforts like NerdsVote, When We All Vote, and countless others to learn more about their resources, upcoming events, and actions you can take to encourage voters in your community to make it to the polls.
  2. Watch: Watch this video from the Turn Up Tuesday series about LGBTQ+ Voting Rights and be sure to check out the June PFLAG Academy On-Demand session PFLAG Votes 2020: Our Right and Our Responsibility.
  3. Share: Did you know that making a plan to vote increases the likelihood that someone will cast their ballot by 4-9%? Use emails, texts, and social media to share your plan to vote with friends and family and ask them to participate in PFLAG’s seven-day #2020VotePlan challenge.

Save the post office

Advocacy

USPS Day of Action

Tomorrow, Tuesday, August 25, thousands of people will take action across America with one clear message: #SaveThePostOffice.

Millions of people, including LGBTQ+ people, depend on the post office to deliver their medications, paychecks, Social Security checks, and bills on time are left without options. To learn more about the USPS, and the recent history, visit pflag.org/blog/saving-election-means-saving-post-office-too

Find an event to attend near you (if you don't see an event near you yet, sign up to host a #SaveThePostOffice event at your local post office)! When you sign up to host, you'll get access to a simple host guide and live webinars for training and support before Tuesday.

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, August 27th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live, where we'll be discussing the article, "10 Percent of Gamers are LGBTQ+ Nielsen Study Shows," from Out Magazine,  by Taylor Henderson.

You can watch live on Facebook, YouTube, or Twitter

For more information--and to check out our discussion questions in advance--visit http://www.straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-august-27-2020.

Remember: We're here to help. Find us all at pflag.org/about/our-people.

Let’s stay safe, stay healthy--and stay connected.
