[1]Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress[2]Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for Congress
When I was first running for office, I did not have health insurance. I
was a waitress and I was running against a 20-year incumbent.
It’s kind of crazy to ask people to support you against someone who has so
much more experience than you, and to say: “Actually, one of the things
that can make us more experienced is actually having these experiences.”
When I was running, I had to launch a canvass — but that morning a doctor
told me I needed to take a blood test. I cried because I could not afford
a blood test, especially without insurance.
So volunteers were walking around with clipboards with my face on it,
asking people to vote for me for Congress, and I had to go to a student
clinic and wait for four hours in the hope that somebody would see me.
Eight years later, I’m very privileged to be serving on the Energy and
Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives. I worked to get on
that committee because it has jurisdiction over all healthcare in the
United States.
And every day that I sit in that committee, I am also that girl that was
sitting in that clinic.
I know there are millions of us that are sitting in clinics and pharmacies
every single day, having to make tough choices, and going home and not
saying a word.
That, at its core, is the indignity of the moment that we’re living in.
Not just the sacrifices that we’re being asked to make, but the fact that
we’re being asked to swallow it and not talk about it, as though it’s not
happening to all of us.
They want to make it seem like it’s only happening to a small sliver of
us.
But the truth is, it’s killing all of us.
We deserve so much better. And the brutal reality is, we are all that we
have. To win a better world, we must stand together and fight for it.
Our main project now is to unite the working class in this country against
a fascist agenda. Period.
