Friends,
Every day in America millions of people drag themselves to work when they're not feeling well in order to keep their kids fed, or pay for their medication, or pay their rent.
Under normal circumstances, this says a lot about the American workforce — people should not have to choose between working while ill and basic human rights. But especially during a pandemic, this means that people are not only jeopardizing their own health, but the health and safety of others — all because they cannot afford to miss a day of work.
There are approximately 57 million Americans who have no paid sick leave options at their jobs. And for those who are getting by paycheck to paycheck, this forces them to choose between being healthy and covering living costs.
The coronavirus has taught us that paid sick leave can save lives. But it shouldn't take a pandemic to provide employees with the support they need to get healthy before returning to work.
We're the only developed nation without a universal paid sick leave policy. And more than ever, that needs to change.
