As we continue to grapple with the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others killed or persecuted for no other reason than the color of their skin, public discussions about race and racism have increased in volume and intensity. Educators feel a sense of responsibility to bring these topics into their classrooms—because young people want to be part of the conversation and should be. If handled effectively, these discussions provide opportunities for timely learning.
Educators sometimes feel hesitant to raise these topics because it may be uncomfortable, strong emotions can emerge and teachers may feel they don’t have enough information or the background to teach the topic well. During this interactive webinar, we will discuss recent current events, connect them to historical examples of racism and review suggestions and strategies for having classroom conversations with young people about race and racism.
