This week, Governor Abigail Spanberger held a bill signing for two major bills to protect access to contraception:

The Right to Contraception Act, which protects the right to obtain, provide, and use all forms of contraceptives. And the Contraceptive Equity Act, which ensures that health insurance covers birth control. It establishes that Virginians won’t have to pay a copay and are able to access birth control with or without a prescription.

Under the former Republican Governor, Youngkin, the Right to Contraception Act was vetoed in 2024 and 2025. But now, with our Democratic trifecta, it has finally been signed into law. This shows just how critical it is to turn out to vote in every single election as we work to protect our fundamental freedoms.

But the work is far from over: Statutory bills can be changed or repealed at any time by future elected leaders, and anti-choice activists have their eyes set on stripping away access to birth control. That is why we must ensure voters vote “YES” on our Reproductive Freedom Amendment this November – which would also protect the right to access birth control and establish it as a fundamental, constitutional right that cannot be infringed upon.
