At the end of this month, we have our first FEC deadline since Ken Paxton
won the runoff. You’re likely going to hear a lot about it, so I wanted to
take a moment up front to explain why.

I understand if you’re a bit skeptical of the focus on these quarterly FEC
deadlines. Before I ran for U.S. Senate, I thought the attention on these
deadlines was a bit hyperbolic.

But the reality is they have a tremendous impact on the narratives around
this race. This one will set the tone for the entire general election. Our
opponents and the media will all be poring through the numbers.

After our FEC deadline, we are legally required to share our fundraising
numbers publicly — not just how much we raise but who is funding this
campaign.

This deadline is a clear example of the story of this race — the
expectations for us are extremely high while the media expects almost
nothing from Ken Paxton.

They know he has a long history of failing to file proper Texas campaign
finance reports. It’s public knowledge that national Republicans and
Paxton are all counting on billionaire donors to fund a super PAC to buy
him this seat.

Meanwhile, we have to prove we can raise the money to compete. We have to
show that, even without a dime of corporate PAC money, our movement has
the resources because hundreds of thousands of folks like you are chipping
in. A strong report cements that Texas is in play.

If we fall short, the media will say we aren’t competitive because we’re
not capable of raising the resources required to run a statewide campaign
in Texas. Folks will write off Texas and dramatically undercut our
momentum.
