Dear John,
A New Generation of Leaders
Summer is here and recent high school graduates often travel, find employment, and prepare for higher education. Some will head to vocational schools, community colleges, or four-year universities. Others, however, accept the bend ahead on the road less traveled at one of five U.S. service academies.
After receiving nominations from my office, nine outstanding young men and women from South Dakota have accepted appointments to attend the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Military Academy, and the United States Naval Academy.
These students will not experience a typical college transition. Their journey begins in mid-June with weeks of rigorous military training before they step into the classroom. The road ahead will demand resilience, discipline, humility, and strength – qualities each has already demonstrated through their character.
Miles Bender of Sioux Falls, Kanin Booth of Summerset, Max Cook of Gregory, Esten Foss of Aberdeen, Lincoln Mansfield of Hurley, Tyler Mueller of Rapid City, Grant Roth of Sioux Falls, Trinidy Sorenson of Sioux Falls, and Anders Van Olson of Yankton, exemplify what it means to serve with purpose and lead with integrity. Their dedication in the classroom, on the athletic field, and within their communities has been exceptional.
While each student has their own reason for pursuing military service through the service academy route, common themes emerged. Esten, Lincoln, and Tyler each expressed a strong desire to serve others. Trinidy and Miles are excited to become part of something greater than themselves through teamwork and leadership. Grant, Kanin, and Anders noted their desire to challenge themselves, grow through adversity, and pursue lives marked by discipline and purpose.
These young men and women will represent South Dakota with honor and distinction. Join me, along with their families and communities, in congratulating them on this remarkable journey and thanking them for their willingness to serve our nation.
Their commitment to our country is admirable, and South Dakota proudly stands beside them.
