Friend,
Who is Ayn Rand?
Most people know her as the author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged.
But she was so much more than a novelist. She was a revolutionary philosopher
who inspired both ardent admirers and fierce detractors.
Her book, Atlas Shrugged, is cited as one of the most influential books in
the last century.
So who is this woman behind all the controversy?
The Atlas Society teaches people about Ayn Rand, her life, her groundbreaking

The Life of Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand was born Alyssa Rosenbalm on February 2nd, 1905, in St. Petersburg,
Russia.
At 12 years old, she and her two little sisters witnessed the first shots of
the Russian Revolution from the window of their apartment. What she witnessed
later, living under Soviet rule, would have a profound impact on her writing
and philosophy.
On the eve of her 22nd birthday, she got a passport to Chicago to visit
relatives, never to return to Russia again.
Ayn Rand got her start as a writer in Hollywood, working on many screenplays
and short stories, two of which would become Broadway plays. When one of her
plays was made into a movie and the studio turned her hero into a villain, she
was inspired to write a novel about a visionary architect who would not
compromise his creative vision for the sake of others: The Foundationhead.
Much like Ayn Rand, The Atlas Society refused to compromise our vision of
bringing her philosophy to new audiences.
We have made it our mission to bring Ayn Rand’s ideas to life for young
people, and we do it by transforming Ayn Rand’s work into a variety of vehicles
that appeal most to them.
Now more than ever before, younger generations need to understand the ideas
of individual liberty, free market economics, and sound philosophy.
Through our graphic novels, pocket guides, animated videos, digital content,
and educational programs and conferences, we are reaching tens of millions of
young minds.
Friend, help us fight back against the rising tide of collectivism and inspire
young people to think critically by supporting The Atlas Society today with a

Ayn Rand wrote her magnum opus, Atlas Shrugged, at a time when America began
romanticizing socialism (much as we are seeing again today).
The novel was the fullest dramatic encapsulation of her philosophic ideas,
that man is a heroic being who should pursue his own happiness, neither
sacrificing himself to others nor sacrificing others to himself.
She called this philosophy Objectivism and went on to further elaborate it in
dozens of essays, books, and public appearances.
In the final years of her life, Rand had this to say,
“The elaboration of a philosophical system is a job that no philosopher can
finish in his lifetime. There is still an awful lot of work to be done.”
The Atlas Society is continuing her work by delivering her joyous vision of
the world and life’s glorious possibilities to new audiences. It’s a vision
that resonates anew with each new reader who discovers her novels for the first
time, and through them, discovers a new vision for themselves as individuals.
