Last month, Donald Trump tried to set aside $1.8 billion in taxpayer money for January 6th rioters in his “anti-weaponization” fund. I’ve been fighting every day in Congress to make sure that not a cent of your money goes to January 6th rioters, and thankfully, the fund now should be indefinitely blocked.

After a bipartisan outcry, public pressure, and legal challenges, a federal judge has now stepped in to block the administration from moving forward with payouts from this fund. I’m glad that the courts have finally confirmed what every American already knows: taxpayer dollars should never be used to compensate insurrectionists.

I’m grateful to my Democratic colleagues in Congress who have helped push to block this fund and to Judge Leonie Brinkema for her decision.

But waiting for the courts to act is not enough. We need an actual check on Donald Trump’s power before he tries something like this again. We have to take back the House.

Because as long as Trump has a rubber-stamp Republican majority in Congress, he’ll keep trying to bend the government to serve himself and his political allies, even if it means rewarding the people who violently tried to overturn an election.
