Hello John,

No doubt the recent news of new restrictions has come as a disappointment, given the efforts made by each of you and by organisations, staff, volunteers and young people across the country to adjust to the situation we find ourselves in.

We continue to work with the officials in the Department to revise the guidance in response to any new restrictions and I'd like to share the newly updated Guidance for Youth Organisations on Resuming Full Services with you.

We have also updated the official DCYA/NYCI Covid Induction for Youth Services to reflect the changes.

This resource is intended to support you in the phased resumption of full youth services in the youth sector. It should be completed by all staff and volunteers.

It is worth noting that the new guidance recognises that youth work provides a controlled environment for young people. Also youth work is seen within the children, childcare and educational sphere and the guidance acknowledges that.

Some of the significant changes include:
  • We must continue with groups no larger than 12 young people with 2 or 3 youth workers indoors or outdoors
  • Youth organisations may operate multiple groups if they have sufficient space and strict public health protocols are in place
  • Physical large group work should stop until further guidance is issued
  • Face coverings should now be worn where social distancing cannot be maintained
  • Youth service transport can operate with the additional measures outlined.
Please make sure to share this update widely with your networks and across the sector.

As ever, if you have any questions or feedback let me know.

Kind regards,

Mary
