Team ENOUGH San Diego Calls on Lawmakers to Pass Gun Reform
Team ENOUGH San Diego took matters into their own hands this week, saying enough is enough to gun violence. Student leaders organized a community forum to address their concerns about feeling unsafe and unable to grow in their schools. They gathered community members and local gun violence prevention activists to make sure elected officials — local to federal — heard their voices.
Local lawmakers, including Rep. Mike Levin (D-San Juan Capistrano), Assemblymember Todd Gloria (D-San Diego), Carlsbad City Councilmember Priya Bhat-Patel, and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear spoke at the event and voiced support for Team ENOUGH’s proposals for common-sense gun safety legislation, including expanding Brady Background Checks. Brady Files Lawsuits Against Major Gun Dealer
Last week, we filed two more lawsuits in North Carolina against gun dealer Academy Sports + Outdoors. The lawsuits allege that Academy illegally and negligently sold guns in multiple straw purchases to Dustan Lawson — who then supplied the weapons to a serial killer who pled guilty in 2017 to murdering seven people between 2003 and 2016. The killer was able to obtain firearms despite being a convicted felon and therefore being prohibited from buying or owning guns. Our legal team is representing the families of three victims, David Carver, Johnny Coxie, and Meagan Leigh Coxie. Read more from Oxygen [[link removed]] .
Happy Birthday to Jim “The Bear” Brady
This Thursday would have marked Jim “The Bear” Brady’s 79th birthday. This week in particular, we reflected on our fearless leaders’ unfailing battle to take action, not sides, against gun violence in America. Jim, and his wife, Sarah, made it their lifelong battle to pass the Brady Bill. Since 1993, Brady Background Checks have saved countless lives. Here are three facts to know about Jim!
1. Jim was a broad-shouldered, strong man filled with love and compassion. That’s why he was nicknamed Jim “The Bear” Brady!
2. On February 11, 2000, President Clinton officially named the White House Press Briefing Room “The James S. Brady Press Briefing Room” in Jim’s honor.
3. In 1996, Jim received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Clinton — the highest civilian award in the United States.

Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) Heroes of the Week
We know that one killer inspires another. That’s why the No Notoriety [[link removed]] campaign is vitally important. Tom and Caren Eves started the movement — which challenges the media not to name or show a photo of anyone who commits acts of mass violence — after their son, Alex, was murdered in the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting. Send a tweet thanking No Notoriety for its important work.
New On the Brady Blog
Our latest blog post is an interfaith response to gun violence following the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso and the gun violence shootings in Chicago over the same weekend. Authored by our Bishops United partner Bishop Mark Beckwith, Rabbi Matthew Gewirtz, and Imam W. Deen Shareef, the piece addresses inherent racism in prevalent messaging around shootings, and how “scapegoating” keeps us from finding solutions to gun violence.
