On behalf of Liberals across Canada, I want to congratulate Erin O'Toole on becoming the new leader of the Official Opposition. I have great respect for those who put their name on a ballot and step forward to contribute their perspectives to our democracy.
This is the most important moment in a generation, as Canadians face the unprecedented impacts of COVID-19 and as we work together to change Canada’s future for the better. Justin Trudeau and our Liberal team will keep working with him and all parties in the weeks ahead to ensure that workers, families, and businesses are supported as our communities get back on their feet.
We have a real chance to build a Canada that is healthier and safer, greener, more fair, and more competitive, and while we will have our differences, we hope the Conservative leader will join us in that work.
There will also be real and important choices ahead though, friend.
Mr. O'Toole has been clear about wanting to take Canada backward to the same policies and approach as Stephen Harper and Andrew Scheer, and that would mean making harmful cuts to services that Canadians count on, rolling back our work to fight climate change, weakening Canada’s gun control laws, and much more.
Friend, I know that we need to always stay ready to keep Canada moving forward, and a big part of that work starts right now.
