John,
Right now, we’re doing everything we can to stop new gerrymanders that would affect this year’s midterm elections.
But Republicans have already started trying to cheat in the next election cycle, too.
Beginning this week, Georgia lawmakers are working on drawing new maps that would go into effect for the 2028 elections.
They’ve been called into a special gerrymandering session by Republican Governor Brian Kemp — who practically became a poster-boy for voter suppression as the state’s top elections official. Now he’s got another chance to silence the will of the people and let the GOP steal unearned power by gutting representation for Georgians of color.
Why are Georgia Republicans already looking ahead to 2028? Well, Democrats might flip the Georgia governor’s seat this November. And if Republicans don’t have unified control of the state government in 2027, they wouldn’t be able to ram through a new, late-decade redraw.
So they’re moving fast while they still can.
This is a transparently cynical power-grab. And it’s a reminder of all the threats our democracy faces in 2026 and beyond.
We must work to prevent new gerrymanders, counter the GOP’s partisan maps wherever possible, elect pro-democracy champions to offices that play key roles in redistricting, and continue growing our grassroots strength to fight for fair maps.
What’s happening this week in Georgia is only the beginning. The fight to defend representative democracy needs all of us.
