The Republican-controlled Congress has spent more than a year rubber-stamping the Trump administration’s harmful policies. Now, Republicans are refusing to put guardrails on what could become a nearly $2 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund for President Trump.
This is not how government is supposed to work. And we must keep talking about it.
A federal judge in Virginia recently blocked any payouts or other work to establish the fund while legal challenges continue to move through the courts. The Department of Justice has since suggested that plans for the fund are not moving forward.
But nothing is set in stone.
When Senate Republicans had the opportunity to ban the fund, they chose not to. They didn’t even bother to put any guardrails on it. And President Trump certainly has not backed away from the idea.
In a recent interview, he said:
"I think the weaponization fund is a great idea, and so do many other Republicans. You have to get it approved. If they get it approved, that's great. If they don't get it approved, I'd be disappointed."
It's worth remembering how we got here.
President Trump's $10 billion lawsuit and the resulting settlement arrangement represent a troubling departure from how our justice system is supposed to function. Few Americans could have imagined a President suing the United States government, appointing his personal attorney to lead the Department of Justice, and settling that lawsuit by creating a fund that could direct nearly $2 billion in taxpayer dollars to him and his allies—with little transparency, oversight, or accountability—while shielding himself, his family, and family’s businesses from any future IRS audits. He has written himself a get-out-of-jail-free card.
The questions this situation raises are as serious. The potential for abuse is obvious. And the implications for public trust in government are profound.
We cannot afford to look away.
That's why we are continuing our work to elect Democrats in Texas and across the country who will fight for transparency, accountability, and responsible government. Taking back the House is essential. Every election matters, and the choices we make in 2026 will determine whether abuses of power continue unchecked or whether we impose the checks and balances that our democracy depends on.
