John, I have a heartwarming story for you. It’s about glasses.
At my old health department in Wayne County, we'd test kids for vision problems in school. A lot of times, the slip telling parents their child needed glasses never made it home — or, it did make it home, but there was no money to do anything about it.
To get these kids the glasses they needed, we put optometrists in vans outside of schools to give free vision tests. Then, we’d ship them a pair of glasses in two weeks. We delivered 10,000 free glasses through this program.
There’s one boy I distinctly remember — we had just given him a pair of glasses, he tried them on, and said: “I’ve got wrinkles in my hand!”
I had to show him my hand. Then everybody else's. He couldn't believe we all had wrinkles on our hands!
He was seeing clearly for the first time in his life, John. And that makes a huge difference, especially for a young kid in school.
This is what our government is supposed to do:
- See the problem.
- Remove the obstacle.
- Deliver.
When corporate PACs buy control over our democracy, you get politicians who prioritize profits over people.
