John,
From unwavering heroism atop Mount Suribachi, to defiant resolve amidst the
twisted, toppled frame of the World Trade Center, to the encapsulation of
American ingenuity and grit on the surface of the moon, our flag has meant
something profound to generations of Americans.
The flag has waved for freedom—the right to speak, worship, and pursue our
dreams. It's stood forself-governance—that radically American idea that power
belongs to the citizen. It's representedopportunity and duty—an obligation to
leave this nation better for those who come after us.
But on this Flag Day, we must ask ourselves: what does our flag mean today?
We are at a turning point, where many in our nation seek a radically different
meaning behind our flag. And while many of the principles our flag embodies
have beeneroded away through carelessness, the left has a calculated plan to
erode the rest. The freedoms it once represented have been constrained. The
self-determination it guarantees has been diminished by those more concerned
with power than principle.
Waving a flag is easy. Living by its principles is harder. It requires
courage—the courage tofight for those freedoms, to defend those values, and to
ensure that the flag continues to stand as a true symbol of liberty,
opportunity, and the American greatness we all believe in for generations yet
unborn.
