We’ve all been watching in horror as Donald Trump dismantles our Postal Service during this pandemic. Here in Maine, we rely on the postal service for a lot of day-to-day necessities, as a key element for many of our small businesses, for mail-in absentee voting, and so much more. Our Voter Protection team is working around the clock to help ensure that Mainers will be able to vote safely in November, no matter what happens.

This isn’t just some far-away story impacting other states. Two mail-sorting machines have been removed from Maine facilities, and we’re already feeling the impacts. People are afraid of running out of prescriptions. Or that their paychecks or benefits will be delayed, causing them to be unable to pay the bills. Thousands of baby chicks shipped via USPS (which historically has been reliable) have died in the mail, costing Maine poultry farmers thousands of dollars. And that’s just the beginning.

But what many don’t realize is that Susan Collins is at the root of the financial problems Trump is using to justify sabotaging the USPS. In 2005, Susan Collins introduced the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act. The PAEA required the USPS to pre-fund all future retiree benefits, a $5.5 billion a year burden that no other federal agency or private corporation is required to uphold. With this bill, Susan Collins laid the groundwork for Donald Trump’s spiteful attempt to undermine the Postal Service.

Never has it been more clear that Maine must lead the way. We must beat Donald Trump In November. We have to defeat Susan Collins, flip the Senate, and remove Mitch McConnell as Majority Leader.
