Open this today - and read it all the way through? ? ? ? ? Friend ? this past week we reached out with major updates about shifting polling in states that will decide control of the Senate and the White House.
All our research is showing that turnout from environmental voters is likely to be larger than the polling margin in Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and other swing states.
There's a major problem: As it stands, our vote-by-mail efforts are underfunded, and if it stays that way, we could lose races we otherwise would have won.
We're reaching out for help. We need to scale up vote-by-mail work and we need to do it quickly. To pull that off we need to raise $70,000 more for vote-by-mail efforts before the end of the month. A group of donors has put up a challenge match to triple every contribution until then.
If everyone reading this right now pitched in ? even $3 ? we'd blow through that goal in minutes. Donate to the LCV Victory Fund today ? your contribution will be tripled ? [link removed]
This is absolutely critical ? we need vote-by-mail efforts to be relentless in order to be successful. There are real challenges to overcome ? lack of pre-paid postage, requirements that ballots be received rather than postmarked by Election Day, restrictions on grassroots groups collecting and delivering ballots, and signature match rejections.
We need your help to pull this off. Right now, we're aiming to do extensive vote-by-mail work in the seven battleground states of Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. All of these states currently permit voting by mail.
Right now, this is the plan: Engage 2 million voters, including traditional climate voters, young people, and communities of color. Make at least 2 million personal contacts with voters either via in-person canvasses (if possible), or, more likely, via "virtual " canvassing with calls and texts. Send 1.7 million pieces of follow-up mail to voters who have yet to return their ballots, using tested and refined messaging techniques to maximize response. Generate more than 33 million impressions via extensive digital programming to help mobilize voters and spur turnout through Election Day. This is going to be a dynamic, layered program that focuses on overcoming barriers to voting among people most likely to support action on climate, including young people and people of color. We're also reaching individuals with low-frequency voting history as well as high-frequency voters whose voting patterns may now be forced to shift to mail voting due to COVID-19.
Friend ? this stuff works ? I promise. During the 2018 election cycle in Montana, we generated 19,650 vote-by-mail applications. The voters we targeted for mail ballots had a 73% turnout rate, higher than the statewide rate. This boost in turnout helped Senator Jon Tester win re-election with support from more than 50% of the total vote ? all in a state that Trump won by more than 20% in 2016.
Moreover, we successfully turned out unlikely voters. Of those who voted, many had not voted in the previous two federal elections, representing a 12% increase from 2008 and a 101% increase from 2010. In total, our programs delivered 26,705 votes, more than Tester's margin of victory.
The question now isn't whether or not the strategy works ? it's whether we have the resources to pull it off. The truth is, vote-by-mail efforts are still underfunded. We can turn that around ? a group of donors has put up a triple-match ? up to $70,000 ? for every contribution before the end of the month.
The absolute best thing you can do right now to help swing this election is make an emergency gift. Even $3 can make a difference ? [link removed]
We can win the Senate and the White House and defend the House ? but it's going to take the entire environmental movement showing up in a big way. Thank you for everything you do, friend.
Onward,
