Dr. Nirav Shah is leading his closest opponent by 7,733 votes in the initial count of the Democratic Primary Election for Maine Governor.

We built the broadest coalition among any campaign, winning more towns than any other with 198 jurisdictions across the state. And Dr. Shah didn’t just win small towns — he won 20 of the 25 highest-turnout cities and towns, both congressional districts, and showed strength in areas of the state where his opponents were expected to perform better.

The bottom line: Dr. Shah is the only candidate who won across major cities, suburbs, rural towns, coastal communities, and both Congressional Districts 1 and 2.

It’s clear who hardworking Mainers want as their next governor, and we are confident that once the Ranked Choice Vote (RCV) tabulation concludes, Dr. Shah will remain in the lead.

However, there’s a lot of work that needs to be done between now and then to ensure the process is conducted transparently and fairly, so that every vote is counted and every reallocation of ranked votes is accurate.

We will be watching every second of this process, but we can’t put our campaign on hold. We just got a new set of tasks — tasks that take time and resources.

We don’t know when the RCV tabulation process will begin or end, or whether there will be disputes or recount requests, but we do know that we can't take our foot off the gas. Not now.
