Dear Friend,


With so many people around the world celebrating soccer and this week marking the International Day of Play, I’ve been thinking about how much of my own childhood was defined by sports and play.


I was always outside training, competing and pushing myself to get better. When soccer became part of my life, it gave me confidence, discipline and a sense of self-worth that helped shape who I am today. I recently shared more about my experience — and why every child deserves the same opportunity.

That’s why UNICEF USA’s Play Can’t Wait campaign to help children access the power of play means so much to me.


So often, people think about play as something extra for children, something that comes after essentials like food, water and shelter. But play is vital. It supports a child’s emotional development, mental health and sense of connection to the world around them.


For millions of children facing crisis, conflict and displacement, play is a way to cope, heal and hold onto a sense of normalcy during incredibly difficult moments. When facing uncertainty and profound loss, it can provide comfort and a sense of belonging. A simple game of soccer can transcend barriers, bringing children of all ages together at a refugee camp, even when they do not speak the same language.

Every child deserves the chance to play, wherever they are born and whatever they’ve been through. That’s why UNICEF is helping children around the world play, learn and just be kids again through recreation kits, child-friendly spaces and programs that provide moments of joy, comfort and stability when they need them most.
