FL-27 Newsletter

Vol. 119, Issue #43

Dear Friends / Estimados Amigos,

This week, I continued fighting for the issues that matter most to South Florida: protecting our seniors, strengthening America's competitiveness, advancing security across the Americas, and preserving the values that define our nation.

In Washington, I introduced bipartisan legislation to crack down on crypto ATM scams that are costing seniors millions of dollars each year, joined my colleagues in supporting stronger security cooperation with Ecuador to combat transnational crime, and welcomed a major endorsement of the DIGNITY Act from some of the nation's leading scientific and research organizations.

I was also proud to advance the Congressional America250 Time Capsule initiative as our nation prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence, while Miami takes center stage as the world gathers in South Florida for the FIFA World Cup.

As always, it is the honor of a lifetime to represent Florida's 27th Congressional District. Thank you for the trust you place in me. My team and I remain ready to serve you.

Sincerely,

María E. Salazar

U.S. Representative (FL-27)

Protecting Seniors from Crypto Scams

Protecting South Florida seniors from financial scams remains one of my top priorities.

That is why this week I joined Congressman Sean Casten (D-IL) to introduce the bipartisan Stop Crypto ATM Scams Act, legislation designed to crack down on a growing wave of fraud that is costing Americans hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

In 2025 alone, Americans lost more than $333 million to crypto ATM scams, with seniors accounting for nearly 85 percent of reported losses.

Criminals often impersonate government agencies, law enforcement officers, or financial institutions and pressure victims into depositing cash into one of the more than 30,000 crypto ATMs operating nationwide. Once that money is transferred, it is often impossible to recover.

Standing with Ecuador Against Transnational Crime

undefined

This week, I joined Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Gimenez, and Carol Miller in reaffirming our support for strong U.S.-Ecuador security cooperation.

Under President Daniel Noboa's leadership, Ecuador has become a key partner in the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking. As criminal networks grow increasingly sophisticated and operate across borders, working closely with trusted allies is essential to protecting both our region and our communities here at home.

Ecuador's efforts to combat cartels and disrupt narcotics trafficking are essential to weakening the criminal organizations that threaten security across our hemisphere. A safer Ecuador means a safer region and a stronger partner in the fight against transnational crime.

The United States has a clear interest in supporting partners that are committed to confronting transnational crime, defending democratic institutions, and promoting regional stability. Strong cooperation with Ecuador makes both our nations safer and strengthens security across the Americas.

Leading the Race for Talent

If America wants to lead the technologies of the future, we cannot afford to educate the world's brightest scientists and engineers only to send them somewhere else.

That is why I was proud to see the GROW Coalition, representing many of the nation's leading scientific, engineering, research, and higher education organizations, endorse our bipartisan DIGNITY Act this week.

Their message is clear: America's leadership in innovation depends on our ability to attract and retain top talent. Yet today, many highly skilled graduates educated at American universities face years-long visa backlogs and legal uncertainty, often forcing them to take their skills and innovations to competing countries.

The DIGNITY Act helps America remain competitive by:

• Retaining top talent educated in the United States, including graduates with advanced STEM and medical degrees.

• Reducing employment-based immigration backlogs so businesses, universities, and research institutions can fill critical workforce needs.

• Strengthening America's ability to compete in emerging technologies and scientific research.

The next generation of breakthroughs should be developed in the United States, not handed to our global competitors.

Preserving America's Story for Future Generations

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, we have a unique opportunity to preserve a snapshot of this historic moment for the Americans who will celebrate our country's 500th birthday in 2276.

This week, the House passed my bipartisan resolution authorizing the official dedication ceremony for the Congressional America250 Time Capsule in the U.S. Capitol.

The time capsule will include contributions from all 50 states and U.S. territories, capturing the people, values, achievements, and experiences that define America today. It will be sealed during a ceremony in Emancipation Hall on June 24 and remain closed until 2276, when our nation commemorates 500 years of independence.

As a member of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, I have worked to ensure South Florida plays a meaningful role in this historic milestone. Earlier this year, we proudly hosted an official America250 Commission meeting at Miami's historic Freedom Tower, highlighting our community's unique place in the American story.

Two hundred and fifty years from now, when this capsule is opened, future generations will have the opportunity to see who we were, what we valued, and how we helped shape the next chapter of our nation's history.

The World Comes to Miami

The FIFA World Cup is officially underway, and there is no better place to welcome the world than Miami.

As the Capital of the Americas, our community reflects the cultures, traditions, and passions of people from every corner of the globe. Over the next month, those cultures will come together right here in South Florida as Hard Rock Stadium hosts seven World Cup matches, placing Miami at the center of one of the largest sporting events on the planet.

The tournament will bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to our region, supporting local businesses, showcasing our vibrant community, and highlighting everything that makes South Florida unique.

Whether you are attending a match, gathering with friends and family to cheer on your favorite team, or joining fans from around the world at the FIFA Fan Festival, this is a historic moment for our city.

Welcome to South Florida, and let the games begin.
