Donald Trump is demanding a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget―the largest in history, a stunning 50% higher than the current year. And Congressional Republicans are working to fulfill that wish.

The good news? Thanks to grassroots opposition and our work to organize hundreds of organizations to weigh in,¹ 12 Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee voted to reject Trump’s budget² while 9 senators on the Armed Services Committee voted against the Senate proposal.³ They know that hundreds of billions more for military contractors means less money for human needs and our communities.

We need to keep the pressure on the House and Senate to reject a bloated, wasteful $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget and oppose ANY increase in Pentagon spending. We’re demanding Congress invest instead in meeting the needs of our communities.

Last year, congressional Republicans cut more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act, and SNAP. Some of those vital funds were shifted to add $150 billion to the Pentagon, and now they want more.

Due to Republicans’ cuts, millions of people are already losing health coverage⁴ and food assistance⁵ at a time when the costs of basic needs are skyrocketing. Communities are being told to do more with less while Pentagon contractors are being lined up for another massive increase.

Meanwhile, this week Congress handed Trump $70 billion more for his rogue ICE and Border Patrol agencies, increasing militarism in our own communities.⁶

We’re demanding Congress fund human needs, including housing, health care, food assistance, public health, and quality education―not more militarism that enriches military contractors without making us more safe.
