John,
10 years ago, we lost 49 of our community members to gun violence at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. At the time, it was the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Today, the original club has been dismantled in preparation for a permanent memorial to the victims and survivors, many of whom are Latino.
At Victory, that horrific day reminded us that all struggles for justice are one struggle. There is no LGBTQ+ equality without racial equality. There is no LGBTQ+ freedom if we are not free from the threat of gun violence.
The legacy of Pulse is also a reminder of why representation matters. When LGBTQ+ people hold positions of leadership and serve in elected office, our communities are seen, our experiences are reflected, and our voices are heard. Building LGBTQ+ political power is not separate from the fight for safety, dignity, and equality. It is essential to achieving and protecting all three.
In the words of Pulse survivor and movement leader Brandon Wolf, "Those who oppose equality and freedom only win when they can convince us that fighting back is hopeless. They only win when they can convince us that we're in it alone."
Through Victory, we are never alone. Through Victory, we come together to uplift our community, elect LGBTQ+ leaders, and build the political power needed to create a future where every person can live freely, safely, and authentically.
With pride and gratitude,
Evan Low
