Congratulations to the Newest Mendota Heights Firefighters!

Hired in 2025, these five probationary firefighters recently completed in-house Fire Academy and passed the Firefighter II exam!  The time commitment as a first-year firefighter is considerable, requiring approximately 40-50 hours per month. This includes fire academy training sessions, department training sessions, call response, and other department events.

Congratulations to Joe Fitzgerald, Chris Jones, Rachel Miller, John Samec, and Nick Segl, as well as the entire training staff and department!

Weed of the Month - Garlic Mustard *("Alliaria petiolata)"*

Garlic Mustard blooms in late spring and early summer, which makes right now a perfect time to identify and remove it. Garlic Mustard is a highly aggressive invasive that spreads and invades woodlands by producing hundreds of seeds. Flowers are white, and form small, rounded clusters. Leaves are triangular, and heart-shaped with toothed edges. The plant was introduced to North America in the 1800s for its herbal and medicinal qualities, and used as a ground cover. This invasive spreads its numerous seeds via wind and outcompetes native low-growing plant species by emerging early in spring and blocking sunlight. Garlic mustard is on the State of Minnesota’s Restricted List [ [link removed] ].

* **Control methods:*

* Removal is easily done by hand-pulling.

Reporting Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination

Illicit discharge is any non-stormwater material entering the storm sewer system, including chemicals, paint, oil, pet waste, and sediment from construction sites. These pollutants can harm local lakes, streams, and rivers by degrading water quality and impacting recreation and wildlife.

Residents can help protect local waters by properly disposing of waste and reporting illicit discharges.

To report an illicit discharge, contact the MN Duty Officer at 800-422-0798 or 651-649-5451, or contact Krista Spreiter, Natural Resources Manager, at [email protected] or 651-255-1123.
