John,
This week, Congress voted to give $70 billion dollars to fund ICE, while 3.5 million people go hungry, and 400 thousand Californians had to cancel their health insurance to stay afloat. After a months-long funding freeze, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security will now receive billions of dollars through a single cash infusion without any restrictions or oversight.
ICE is now the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency, again. We checked the receipts. Here’s what this means for our communities:
$38 billion for ICE to hire and arm more masked agitators like the ones that invaded our streets last years
$22 billion for Border Patrol to operate with no oversight
$350 million to incentivize police to target immigrant communities
When ICE began roving patrols in Los Angeles and Oxnard nearly one year ago to the day, Californians held the line and helped create the blueprint for how community power can multiply when we need it most. Now, we must grow that power to shape our state, put families first, and build a future we can take pride in.
The billionaires don’t play fair, neither do the extremist politicians they fund. It’s up to us to end the cruelty they fuel, call out their games, and tear up their playbook.
When we come together, we can find the courage to fight back against the forces threatening the lives of people who come to our country seeking safety, and the working families struggling to keep food on the table. Together, we can write new rules so all of us win.
Stay ready.
